Prix Sir John Sulman

Le prix Sir John Sulman est décerné chaque année pour « la meilleure peinture de sujet/genre et/ou fresque/projet de fresque réalisé au cours des deux années précédant la date [de clôture] », et sa valeur était de 20 000 $ en 2008. Les techniques autorisées sont l'acrylique, l'huile, l'aquarelle ou les techniques mixtes, et les candidats doivent résider en Australie depuis cinq ans^[1].

La définition des termes donnée par l'AGNSW est la suivante :

Une peinture de genre est généralement une composition représentant un ou plusieurs aspects de la vie quotidienne et peut mettre en scène des personnages, des natures mortes, des intérieurs ou des figures dans un paysage. Une peinture de sujet, contrairement à une peinture de genre, est idéalisée ou dramatisée. Typiquement, une peinture de sujet tire son thème de l'histoire, de la poésie, de la mythologie ou de la religion. Dans les deux cas, cependant, le style peut être figuratif, représentatif, abstrait ou semi-abstrait. Une peinture murale est une image fixée directement sur un mur ou un plafond, dans le cadre d'un projet architectural et/ou décoratif^[1].
