普遍包絡代数

${\displaystyle {\mathfrak {g}}}$ を任意のリー代数とする。このとき以下の普遍性質を満たす結合代数 A とリー代数の準同型写像 ${\displaystyle i:{\mathfrak {g}}\to A}$ の組 ${\displaystyle (A,i)}$ が存在する（A は交換子積によってリー代数とみる）。任意の結合代数 ${\displaystyle A'}$ とリー代数準同型写像 ${\displaystyle i'\colon {\mathfrak {g}}\to A'}$ に対し、結合代数の準同型写像 ${\displaystyle f\colon A\to A'}$ で、${\displaystyle f\circ i=i'}$ を満たすものが唯一つ存在する。このような ${\displaystyle (A,i)}$ は同型を除いて一意的に存在し、普遍包絡代数といい、A を ${\displaystyle U({\mathfrak {g}})}$ で表す:

${\displaystyle {\mathfrak {g}}}$ をリー代数、${\displaystyle T({\mathfrak {g}})}$ をそのベクトル空間としてのテンソル代数とする。また、${\displaystyle {\mathcal {I}}}$ を ${\displaystyle x\otimes y-y\otimes x-[x,y]\quad (x,y\in {\mathfrak {g}})}$ が生成する両側イデアルとする。これによって

${\displaystyle U({\mathfrak {g}})=T({\mathfrak {g}})/{\mathcal {I}}}$

とする。自然な写像 ${\displaystyle T({\mathfrak {g}})\to U({\mathfrak {g}})}$ を ${\displaystyle {\mathfrak {g}}}$ に制限して ${\displaystyle i\colon {\mathfrak {g}}\to U({\mathfrak {g}})}$ が定まり、${\displaystyle (U({\mathfrak {g}}),i)}$ は普遍包絡代数になる。
