Energy is the quantitative property that can be transferred to a physical body or a physical system, recognizable through its ability to do work and through transfers that appear as heat and light. It is a conserved quantity: in any process, energy can change form via energy transformation, but it cannot be created or destroyed (the conservation of energy). Calling energy a “quantitative property” means it is a measurable physical quantity that can be assigned a numerical value (with units) to describe the state of a system and track exchanges between systems. This is what makes it useful for calculation: you can add up different contributions (such as kinetic energy and potential energy) to get a system’s total, and you can account for transfers into or out of the system as work or heat in a way that can be checked by measurement.
