Charles Stangor

Er erwarb seinen Bachelor-Abschluss 1973 am Beloit College und den M.A. 1984 an der New York University. Hier promovierte er auch 1986 zum Ph.D.

Von 1986 bis 1987 war er Assistenzprofessor an der Michigan State University. Seine weitere berufliche Karriere vom Assistenzprofessor bis zum Professor für Psychologie verlief ab 1987 an der Universität von Maryland. 1998 war er Gastprofessor an der Universität Tübingen. Er erhielt auch Forschungsstipendien des National Institute of Mental Health und der National Science Foundation. Zuletzt war er Professor und stellvertretender Leiter des Fachbereichs Psychologie im Bereich Sozial-, Entscheidungs- und Organisationswissenschaften an der University of Maryland.

Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen auf der Entwicklung von Stereotypen und Vorurteilen sowie auf deren Einfluss auf Personen, die potenziellen Diskriminierungen ausgesetzt sind. Er untersuchte dabei die kognitiven und motivationalen Determinanten von Stereotypisierung und Vorurteilen, den Einfluss der ethnischen Zugehörigkeit auf die akademische Leistung sowie die Wahrnehmung von Vorurteilen durch stigmatisierte Zielpersonen und den Auswirkungen von Vorurteilen auf diese Personen.

Sein mit David McMillan verfasster Beitrag zu den Gedächtnisleistungen für Schema-inkonsistente Information gilt als eines der klassischen Experimente in der Psychologie. Dabei wurden mittels einer Metaanalyse der Einfluss sozialer Erwartungen auf das Gedächtnis für Informationen, die mit diesen Erwartungen übereinstimmen bzw. nicht übereinstimmen, untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass das Gedächtnis für nicht übereinstimmende Informationen im Allgemeinen besser war als für übereinstimmende Informationen, sowohl hinsichtlich der Abruf- als auch der Wiedererkennungssensitivität. Verschiedene Moderatorvariablen beeinflussten die Stärke dieser Gesamteffekte, darunter die Stärke der der Informationsverarbeitung zugrunde liegenden Erwartung, die Komplexität bzw. die kognitiven Anforderungen der Verarbeitungsaufgabe, die Anzahl der Reize, die Art der Erwartung, die Art des Zielreizes, die Informationsverarbeitungsziele der Versuchspersonen und die Verzögerung zwischen der Darbietung der Reizinformationen und dem Gedächtnistest.
