Gordon Willey

Gordon Willey studierte Ethnologie an der University of Arizona und erwarb dort 1935 den Bachelor- und 1936 den Magistergrad. Sein Studium setzte er dann an der Columbia University fort, wo er 1942 zum Ph.D. promovierte. Nach kurzer Lehrtätigkeit an der dortigen Universität arbeitete er von 1943 bis 1950 beim Bureau of American Ethnology. Von 1950 bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1983 wirkte er als Professor für Mexikanische und Zentralamerikanische Archäologie an der Harvard University. Willey arbeitete vor allem auf dem Gebiet der Archäologie in Nord-, Mittel- und Südamerika und betrieb intensive Feldforschungen.

Im Jahre 1961 war Willey Präsident der American Anthropological Association und 1968 der Society for American Archaeology. Außerdem war er Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Sciences und der National Academy of Sciences. Ehrendoktorwürden verliehen ihm die University of Arizona, die University of New Mexico und die University of Cambridge.

Neben seinen Veröffentlichungen über archäologische Funde publizierte Gordon Willey über die amerikanische Archäologie im Allgemeinen und ihre Geschichte.
