James L. Peacock

James L. Peacock studierte zunächst Psychologie an der Duke University und erwarb dort 1959 den Bachelorgrad. Zwischen 1962 und 1996 führte er mehrmals ethnologische Feldforschungen in Indonesien durch und setzte sein Studium an der Harvard University fort, wo er 1965 zum Ph.D. promovierte. Zwei Jahre arbeitete er dann als Hochschullehrer an der Princeton University. 1967 wechselte er an die University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dort lehrte er (seit 1973 als Lehrstuhlinhaber) das Fach Ethnologie bis zu seiner Emeritierung 2015. Seit 1995 ist Peacock Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Sciences.^[2] Im Jahre 2025 wurde er Mitglied der American Philosophical Society.^[3] Im gleichen Jahr verlieh ihm seine Universität die Ehrendoktorwürde.^[4] Neben seinen Veröffentlichungen über Indonesien und den dortigen Islam publizierte Peacock auch zu theoretischen Themen der Ethnologie.
