Laura Bohannan

Laura Altman Smith Bohannan (* 20. Juli 1922 in New York City; † 18. März 2002 in Chicago) war eine US-amerikanische Ethnologin und Hochschullehrerin.[1]
Leben und Wirken
Laura Bohannan studierte zunächst Klassische Philologie an der University of Arizona und legte dort 1943 ihre Bachelorprüfung ab. Anschließend wandte sie sich dem Gebiet der Ethnologie zu und setzte ihr Studium fort. An dieser Universität erwarb sie 1947 den Magistergrad. Zusammen mit ihrem Ehemann, dem Ethnologen Paul Bohannan, betrieb sie von 1949 bis 1951 Feldforschungen bei dem Volk der Tiv in Nigeria. Zusammen veröffentlichten sie mehrere Werke. Weitere Feldforschungen folgten von 1954 bis 1956 in Kenia. An der University of Oxford promovierte Laura Bohannan 1951 zum Ph.D. Als Hochschullehrerin war sie zunächst als Assistenzprofessorin an der University of Chicago und von 1962 bis 1990 als Professorin an der University of Illinois tätig. Von 1970 bis 1973 war sie Herausgeberin der Zeitschrift "American Anthropologist" und von 1983 bis 1984 Präsidentin der African Studies Association.
Ihre Ehe mit Paul Bohannan wurde 1975 geschieden.
