Laura Maud Thompson

Laura Maud Thompson studierte Ethnologie zunächst am Mills College und erwarb dort 1927 den Bachelorgrad. Nach einjähriger Tätigkeit als Sozialarbeiterin setzte sie ihr Studium am Radcliffe College fort, wechselte aber ein Jahr später an die University of California, Berkeley. Dort promovierte sie 1933 zum Ph.D. Ihr dortiger akademischer Lehrer war vor allem Alfred L. Kroeber. Längere Zeit war sie dann Mitarbeiterin am Bishop Museum in Honolulu. Ethnologische Feldforschungen führte sie zunächst auf den Marianeninseln und den Fidschi-Inseln durch. Ab 1938 arbeitete sie längere Zeit auf Guam, anschließend erforschte sie ab 1941 die Hopi in Arizona im Rahmen eines Projekts der University of Chicago. Bis 1947 war sie als Mitarbeiterin des Bureau of Indian Affairs tätig. Als Gastprofessorin lehrte sie in der Folgezeit an zahlreichen Hochschulen in den USA, ohne einen Lehrstuhl zu erhalten.

Im Jahre 1973 erhielt sie die Ehrendoktorwürde des Mills College. 1979 wurde sie für ihre Forschungsarbeit von der Society for Applied Anthropology mit dem "Bronislaw Malinowski Award" ausgezeichnet.
