Ngumbi ist eine Nordwest-Bantusprache und gehört neben der Sprache Yasa zur Yasa-Gruppe innerhalb der Bube-Benga-Gruppe, die als Guthrie-Zone A30 klassifiziert wird.
Sie hat die Dialekte Asonga, Bomudi und Moganda.
