Peter Trudgill

Peter Trudgill studierte Sprachwissenschaft und Neuphilologie an der University of Cambridge (King’s College) und der University of Edinburgh, wo er 1971 zum Ph.D. promovierte. Von 1970 bis 1986 war er Hochschullehrer (zuletzt Professor) an der University of Reading. Von 1987 bis 1992 war er Professor für Soziolinguistik an der University of Essex, anschließend bis 1998 für Englische Sprachwissenschaft an der Universität Lausanne. Zuletzt hatte er eine Professur an der Universität Freiburg (Schweiz) inne und wurde 2005 emeritiert. Seit diesem Jahr ist er Honorarprofessor für Soziolinguistik an der University of East Anglia. Für seine wissenschaftliche Arbeit auf dem Gebiet der Soziolinguistik, die Tätigkeit in internationalen Fachgesellschaften und seine Veröffentlichungen wurden ihm zahlreiche Ehrungen zuteil: Ehrendoktorwürden erhielt er u. a. von der Universität Uppsala (1995), der University of East Anglia (2002), der La Trobe University (2005) und der Universität Murcia (2022). Er gehört mehreren wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaften an, so der British Academy (1989), den wissenschaftlichen Akademien in Norwegen und Schweden sowie seit 2009 der Academia Europaea.

In seinen zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen beschäftigt sich Peter Trudgill neben soziolinguistischen Themen vor allem mit der Dialektologie der englischen Sprache und dem kolonialen Englisch.
