Shirley Ardener

Shirley Ardener studierte Ethnologie an der London School of Economics und an der University of Oxford. Zu Anfang der 1950er Jahre begannen ihre jahrzehntelangen Feldforschungen in Westafrika, insbesondere in Kamerun. Dort arbeitete sie zusammen mit ihrem Ehemann, Edwin Ardener, intensiv zusammen. Einige der hieraus resultierenden Publikationen wurden von beiden zusammen veröffentlicht. Außerdem gab sie Arbeiten des 1987 verstorbenen Edwin W. Ardener posthum heraus. Seit ihrer gemeinsamen Rückkehr nach Oxford nach 1963 lehrte Shirley Ardener als Dozentin an der University of Oxford in Verbindung mit dem dortigen Queen Elizabeth House (Department of International Development). Dort wirkt sie vor allem im Bereich der „International Gender Studies“. Für ihre Forschungsarbeit wurde sie 1991 mit dem „Order of the British Empire“ (Officer) ausgezeichnet.
