Stratis Papaioannou

Papaioannou erwarb sein Diplom (πτυχίο) in griechischer Philologie 1995 an der Universität Athen. 1996 erwarb er zudem in Athen ein Diplom in byzantinischer Musik. Er setzte sein Studium am Institut für Byzantinistik und Neogräzistik der Universität Wien fort und wurde dort 2000 mit einer Dissertation unter dem Titel Writing the Ego: Michael Psellos’ Rhetorical Autography bei Wolfram Hörandner und Johannes Koder in Byzantinistik promoviert. Von 2000 bis 2005 war er Assistant Professor an der Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., von 2006 bis 2018 Assistant Professor, dann Associate Professor und Full Professor an der Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Von 2018 an war er ordentlicher Professor für byzantinische Philologie an der Universität Kreta. 2023 wechselte er als Forschungsdirektor an die Abteilung Byzantinistik des Instituts für Geschichte des Nationalen Hellenischen Forschungszentrums in Athen. Vom 1. April 2026 an ist er als Nachfolger von Marc Lauxtermann der Stavros Niarchos Foundation–Bywater and Sotheby Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature an der Universität Oxford. Gastprofessuren führten ihn an die École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris und die American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt ist die byzantinische Literatur in all ihren Erscheinungsformen, insbesondere der byzantinische Universalgelehrte Michael Psellos sowie Symeon Metaphrastes, Verfasser einer Sammlung von Heiligenviten.
