- 30 April â 1 May: the Jacobite rising of Viscount Dundee ends in defeat at the Battle of Cromdale.[1]
- 13 February â massacre of Glencoe: Members of Clan MacDonald of Glencoe killed by members of Clan Campbell after they refuse to swear allegiance to King William III.[2]
- 28 December â on the death of Queen Mary II, William III becomes sole monarch of Scotland, England and Ireland.[2]
- 9 May â Parliament of Scotland assembles to investigate the Glencoe massacre.[2]
- 1 November â establishment of the Bank of Scotland.[3]
- Education Act 1696 ordains a school in every parish (successful; act governs education until the 1872 act).
- July â first expedition sets sail as part of the Darien scheme.[4][5]
