The contesting teams were the 1988–89 Alpha Ethniki champions, AEK Athens and the 1988–89 Greek Cup winners, Panathinaikos.[1][2][3] AEK Athens won 6–5 on a penalty shoot-out after a 1–1 draw at the end of extra time.[4]
