Marcelo Ríos was the defending champion, but lost in the third round to Todd Martin.

Moyá attained the ATP world No. 1 ranking for the first time by reaching the final. He became the first Spaniard to be ranked No. 1 by the ATP; Pete Sampras was also in contention for the top ranking.^[1]
