Far Eastern Qualification for the tournament took place between September 4 and September 6, 2000 in Sapporo, Japan.

IIHF honors and awards
The 2001 IIHF Hall of Fame induction ceremony has held in Hanover during the World Championships. Isao Kataoka of Japan was given the Paul Loicq Award for outstanding contributions to international ice hockey.[2]
