Villarreal 2020–21 football season
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 2020–21 season was the 98th season in the existence of Villarreal CF and the club's eighth consecutive season in the top flight of Spanish football. In addition to the domestic league, Villarreal participated in this season's editions of the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Europa League. The season covered the period from 20 July 2020 to 30 June 2021, with the late start to the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain.

On 26 May 2021, Villarreal defeated Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League Final 11–10 on penalties following a 1–1 draw after extra time, winning the competition for the first time in club history.[2]

Notes
- Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, the match was played behind closed doors.
- Qarabağ played their home matches at the neutral venue Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium, Istanbul (Turkey), instead of their regular home stadium Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium, Baku, as UEFA announced on 20 October 2020 to temporarily suspend all UEFA matches taking place in Armenia and Azerbaijan until further notice due to the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.[44]
- The Villarreal v Maccabi Tel Aviv match was originally scheduled at 21:00, but was delayed due to heavy rain.
- The Villarreal v Qarabağ match was cancelled and awarded as a 3–0 win to Villarreal after several players of the Qarabağ squad were tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2.[45]
