On 19 January 2026, at 11:21:12 PST (UTC+5), a Mw 5.6 earthquake struck near Barishal, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Two people were killed and five others were injured.
The earthquake struck in Barishal, a town in the far north of Pakistan near the Afghanistan–China border and Durand Line. The earthquake severely affected the valley of Chapursan in Hunza district.[2] The earthquake was felt across the Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir regions, and as far away as Islamabad, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, and Kazakhstan.[3] Tremors were also felt in Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.[4] 1,896,000 people were estimated to have felt weak shaking, 731,000 light, and 13,000 moderate. USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses.[5]
