Lando Norris (McLaren) converted pole position for the sprint event to a victory ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari). Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) then converted pole position for the Grand Prix to a win, making him the first driver to convert his first three consecutive pole positions into wins at the same events. The McLarens of Norris and Piastri completed the podium, making McLaren's second podium of the 2026 season and first double podium.
Background
The event was held at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami Gardens, Florida, for the fifth time in the circuit's history, across the weekend of May 1–3.[2] The Grand Prix was the fourth round of the 2026 Formula One World Championship and the fifth running of the Miami Grand Prix.[3] It was also the second of six Grands Prix in the season to utilize the sprint format and the third time overall that the Miami Grand Prix has featured it.[4]
The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, which were scheduled to immediately precede the Miami Grand Prix, were cancelled due to the Iran war. The resulting break in the season was used to introduce changes to the technical regulations, especially regarding the power unit.[5]
Championship standings before the race
Mercedes's Kimi Antonelli, who won the previous round in Suzuka, entered the round as the leader of the Drivers' Championship. Holding 72 points, Antonelli led his teammate George Russell by nine points, and third-placed Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) by a further fourteen. Mercedes entered the round as the leader of the Constructors' Championship. Holding 135 points, they led Ferrari by 45 points, and third-placed McLaren by a further 45 points.[6]
Entrants
The drivers and teams were the same as the season entry list with no additional stand-in drivers for the race.[7]
Tyre choices
Tyre supplier Pirelli brought the C3, C4, and C5 tyre compounds (the three softest in their range) for teams to use at the event.[8]
Practice
The sole free practice session was held on May 1, 2026, at 12:00 local time (UTC–4), and was topped by Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) ahead of Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Oscar Piastri (McLaren).[1] The session was extended from 60 to 90 minutes after rule changes were implemented during the April break.[5]
Sprint qualifying
Sprint qualifying was held on May 1, 2026, at 16:30 local time (UTC–4), and determined the starting grid order for the sprint.[1]

Notes
- ^a – Isack Hadjar qualified ninth, but was disqualified for a technical infringement.[15] He was allowed to race at the stewards' discretion and started from the pit lane as his car was modified under parc fermé conditions.[16]
Race
The race was held on May 3, 2026, and was scheduled to start at 16:00 local time (UTC–4) before being pushed up to 13:00 due to the threat of heavy rainstorms. It was run for 57 laps.[1][17]
Race report
As the lights went out, Mercedes's Kimi Antonelli lost places to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen. Leclerc inherited the lead while Verstappen lost the rear of his car while hitting the turn 1 exit curb, causing him to spin and drop down to tenth place. Further down the order, Alpine's Franco Colapinto was battling Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton when the two made contact, causing damage to Hamilton's car. The incident was ruled a racing incident. On lap 4, Antonelli temporarily passed Leclerc for the lead but was retaken the following lap. The battle allowed reigning World Champion, McLaren's Lando Norris, to overtake Antonelli for second.[18]
That lap, there were two separate incidents that neutralised the race. First, Red Bull's Isack Hadjar clipped the inside wall at the turn 14 chicane, which sent his car into the barriers at low speed. Secondly, Racing Bulls's Liam Lawson went into anti-stall while he was trying to pass Alpine's Pierre Gasly, hitting the Frenchman at turn 17 and causing him to flip into the barriers. During the ensuing safety car period, Lawson and Audi's Nico Hülkenberg retired while Verstappen changed to hard tyres, falling to 16th as a result. At the restart, Norris overtook Leclerc with Antonelli also overtaking the Monegasque a few laps later.[18][19]
On lap 21, Mercedes's George Russell was the first of the frontrunners to pit onto the hard tires, exiting in 12th place. To avoid an undercut, Ferrari pitted Leclerc, but he had a slow stop that caused him to come out behind Russell. On lap 27, Antonelli was next to pit and came out behind a duelling Verstappen and Hamilton. His outlap was strong enough so that when Norris pitted the next lap, giving the lead to his teammate Oscar Piastri, he came out behind Antonelli. Once Piastri had pitted, Verstappen temporarily inherited the lead, though his tyres had degraded significantly. He was passed by Antonelli and Norris mere laps later.[18]
While Norris tried to close the two-second gap to Antonelli from laps 30 to 45, Russell was passed by Leclerc and Piastri who both started to gain on Verstappen. On lap 47, Verstappen was passed by Leclerc for third while Piastri passed him the following lap. A battle between Leclerc and Piastri for the final podium spot began with Piastri eventually passing Leclerc on the penultimate lap, while Russell passed Verstappen that same lap after minor contact between the two that damaged the Briton's front wing. On the final lap, Leclerc spun and tapped his front left tire and suspension against the wall. Leclerc, now suffering damage, was nursing his car to the end, resulting in him having to go off the track on several occasions. However, he was unable to stop Russell from overtaking him before turn 17, while Verstappen managed to pass him right before the finish line for fifth.[18][19]
Antonelli recorded his third career win and third win in a row from pole position, making him the first driver to convert his first three consecutive pole positions into wins at the same events, and the third driver in history to have their first three wins consecutively after Damon Hill and Mika Häkkinen. The McLarens completed the podium: Norris finished second, marking his first podium as the reigning World Champion, and Piastri finished third.[18][20]
Post-race
After the race, both Verstappen and Leclerc were penalised: the former received a five-second penalty for crossing the pit lane exit line after his pit stop, while the latter, who finished sixth on track, received a drive-through penalty, converted to 20 seconds, for leaving the track and gaining an advantage on multiple occasions.[21]
Race classification
Notes
- ^a – Max Verstappen received a five-second time penalty for crossing the white line at pit exit. His final position was not affected by the penalty.[22][24]
- ^b – Charles Leclerc finished sixth on track, but received a post-race drive-through penalty converted into a twenty-second time penalty for leaving the track on several occasions without reason.[22][25]
