Suspect
Joel Christian Pacheco Maldonado, a Honduran national who wasn't related to the family, was arraigned in court on September 14 in relation to the shooting, and was charged with capital murder and three counts of child endangerment, since several children between the ages of 2 months and 9 years were present at the house during the shooting. Maldonado was deemed a flight risk, and was denied bond. Manuel Trevino, the Cameron County Sheriff, characterized Maldonado's alleged actions as "revenge" because he claimed he was tired of being bullied.[1][3]
