Four films were excluded from the official shortlist for this year's Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA), and the organizers have not offered any explanation, which has raised questions from the local film industry.^[5][6]

On January 13, 2026, the Hong Kong Film Awards announced the "List of Films to be Officially Released in Hong Kong in 2025" for the first round of voting. The eligibility criteria stated that any Hong Kong film that has been publicly screened in Hong Kong for the first time from January 1 to December 31, 2025, and has been screened for no less than five times in seven consecutive days, is automatically eligible to participate in the '44th Hong Kong Film Awards'. However, it was discovered that four films that should have been eligible for nomination were missing, including "Valley of the Shadow of Death", "Finch & Midland", "Vital Signs", and "Mother Bhumi". At first, it was suspected that it was just a minor oversight, but various signs later indicated that it seemed to have been deliberately removed. The Hong Kong Film Awards Association has not responded to any questions since the incident, and when asked by the media, they replied "no response".^[7]

However, at the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards, the production company of "To My Nineteen-Year-Old Self" withdrew from the nomination but was refused. The association explained at the time that as long as a film met the eligibility criteria, it was guaranteed to be nominated and there was no way to withdraw. This highlights the absurdity of the fact that a film that met the eligibility criteria was not nominated this time.^[8][9]
