Ernesto Alexis Vega Rojas (born 25 November 1997) is a Mexican professional footballer who plays as a forward or winger for Liga MX club Toluca FC, which he captains, and the Mexico national team.[2]

Club career
Toluca
Vega made his senior team debut on 27 February 2016 coming on as a substitute in a home league match against Pachuca.[3] On April 5 he scored his first professional goal for Toluca in the Copa Libertadores against Ecuadorian club Quito, the game ended 2–1 and Toluca qualified to the tournament's Round of 16.[4] On 16 April, Vega scored his first two goals in the league against Veracruz in a 4–1 home victory.[5][6]
Guadalajara
On 8 December 2018, Vega joined Guadalajara for a reported fee of US$9 million, making his transfer one of the most expensive in the club's history.[7]
After playing six games without any goals and going three straight games without any wins, on 16 February 2019, Vega managed to score 3 goals in the 3–0 victory against town rivals Atlas, his first career hat-trick.[8]
Prior to the start of the Apertura 2021, Vega was given the number 10 jersey.[9] In May 2022, Vega extended his contract until 2024, becoming the highest paid player in the club's history.[10]
Return to Toluca
On 17 January 2024, Vega's repeated disciplinary issues at Guadalajara led to his transfer to Toluca.[11][12]
On 8 March 2025, after trailing behind two goals against Necaxa, Vega scored a hat-trick, finishing the match at 5–2.[13] Vega helped Toluca to win the Clausura 2025 league title, contributing an assist and a goal via penalty kick in the finals against América, for an aggregate 2–0 victory.[14] At the end of the season, he was the team's top scorer with 13 goals and 11 assists.[15] He was included in the tournament's best XI and was awarded Best Attacking Midfielder and Goal of the Year by the league.
On 14 December, returning from an injury, Vega was subbed on in the second leg of the Apertura finals against Tigres UANL, defeating them in a penalty shootout 9–8 where he scored in both attempts, including the game winner.[16]
International career
Youth
Vega was called up by Jaime Lozano to participate at the 2020 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship, scoring one goal in five appearances, where Mexico won the competition. He was awarded the Golden Ball for best player[17] and included in the tournament's Best XI.[18] He was subsequently called up to participate in the 2020 Summer Olympics.[19] Vega scored Mexico's final goal in a 3–1 victory over Olympic hosts, Japan, as they won the third-place match to win the bronze medal.[20]
Senior
Vega made his senior national team debut on 26 March 2019, under Gerardo Martino in a friendly against Paraguay, as a 78th-minute substitute for Javier Hernández.[21]
In May 2019, Vega was included in the provisional 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup roster[22] and was subsequently included in the final list.[23] In the first group stage match against Cuba, he would score his first goal with the national team in a 7–0 thrashing.[24] Mexico would go on to win the tournament.[25]
In November 2022, he was included in the 26-man roster for that year's edition of the World Cup.[26]
In June 2025, Vega was included in Mexico's roster for the Gold Cup.[27] In the quarter-finals match against Saudi Arabia, he would score the first goal of the match in an eventual 2–0 victory.[28]
Vega was named in the 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted on home soil.[29][30]
