The Anania Shirakatsi Medal (Armenian: Անանիա Շիրակացու մեդալ) is a state award of the Republic of Armenia, presented by the President for outstanding activity, inventions and discoveries in the fields of economy, engineering, architecture, science and technology.[1][2] It is named after the 7th-century Armenian scholar Anania Shirakatsi, regarded as the founder of the exact and natural sciences in Armenia.[1]

History
The medal was established by the law "On the Anania Shirakatsi Medal", adopted by the Supreme Council of Armenia on 23 July 1993, signed by the President the same day, and put into force on 8 August 1993 — one of several state medals created that day, alongside the Medal of Mkhitar Heratsi, the Medal of Mkhitar Gosh and the Movses Khorenatsi Medal.[3][4] The founding law was amended on 15 November 2000.[4]
The original law lost force on 9 August 2014, when the medal was re-established without substantive change under the new law "On State Awards and Honorary Titles of the Republic of Armenia", adopted by the National Assembly on 21 June 2014 (Law No. ՀՕ-100-Ն) and signed by the President on 18 July 2014.[3][5]
Description and precedence
Under the 2014 law, the Anania Shirakatsi Medal — together with the Medal of Mkhitar Gosh, the Medal of Mkhitar Heratsi and the Movses Khorenatsi Medal — is a metal medallion worn on the left side of the chest.[5] In the official order of medals, it ranks below the Medal of Mkhitar Heratsi and above the Movses Khorenatsi Medal.[5][6]
Recipients
The medal has been awarded to Armenian and foreign scientists, engineers, architects, business leaders and public figures. Examples include:
- Architect Sashur Kalashyan, awarded in 2021 "for his significant contribution to the development of architecture and urban-planning".[7]
- Suleiman Jazir Al-Herbish, Director General of the OPEC Fund for International Development, awarded on 13 July 2009.[8]
- Yuri Semyonov (Russia) and Tatyana Anodina, Chairperson of the Interstate Aviation Committee, both awarded in October 2011 during a state visit of President Serzh Sargsyan to Russia.[9]
- Albert Karakhanian (posthumously), Hunan Kostanian and Armen Hovhanissian, awarded in September 2011 for their work on the reconstruction of the Matenadaran.[10]
- Deputy CEO of Russian Railways Shevket Shaydullin, awarded "for his contribution to strengthening Armenian-Russian economic cooperation".[11]
- Chemist Suren Kharatyan, head of the Laboratory of Macrokinetics of Solid Phase Reactions at the Institute of Chemical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.[12]
