Background

Ankan Kumar Roy has a background in classical music training. From an early stage of his career, he focused on melody-driven composition and emotionally reflective songwriting. His work often explores themes of solitude, longing, and emotional distance while maintaining the traditional sensibilities of Bangla music.[2]

Career

Early work

Roy first gained attention in the independent music scene with the song Upo, released through the Hatirpool Sessions. The song was composed during a period of illness and isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following its release, Upo became one of the most viewed tracks from the platform and contributed to his growing recognition among digital audiences.[3]

Coke Studio Bangla

In September 2025, Ankan Kumar Roy featured on Coke Studio Bangla season 3 with the song Long Distance Love, released as the fifth track of the season.[4]

The song was co-written by Roy and Canada-based Bangladeshi singer-songwriter Pragata Naoha and performed alongside Sheikh Mumtahina Mehzabin Afrin. The music video, directed by Adnan Al Rajeev, was filmed in an abandoned gallery and marked the first black-and-white visual presentation in Coke Studio Bangla.[5]

The song explored emotional distance and longing in relationships shaped by physical separation and received extensive discussion in national media.[6]

Reception

Long Distance Love received coverage from multiple national outlets, highlighting its restrained vocal delivery, minimalist orchestration, and visual presentation.[7]

In October 2025, the song topped Spotify India’s Top Viral Songs chart for two consecutive weeks, becoming the first Bangladeshi track to achieve this milestone.[8]

The release and its cross-border reception were also reported by national media outlets.[9] [10]

Musical style

Ankan Kumar Roy’s music is characterized by intimate lyricism, restrained vocal delivery, and a preference for acoustic and orchestral arrangements. Though rooted in classical training, his work incorporates contemporary Bangla and alternative influences while maintaining a minimalist and emotionally focused approach.

Other works

In addition to Upo and Long Distance Love, Roy has released other songs including Na Pele and Bhule Jaak. He is regarded as part of a new generation of Bangladeshi musicians contributing to the evolving independent music scene.
