The film premiered theatrically in Mexico on July 23, 1982.[3] The narrative chronicles the criminal career of a real-life, notorious hitman who specialized in political assassinations across Western Mexico during the post-revolutionary era of the 1920s and 1930s.[4]
Historical background and plot
The narrative is directly based on the biographical life of Rodolfo Álvarez del Castillo y Rojas, a real-life gunslinger from the region of Los Altos de Jalisco who later relocated to Guadalajara.[3] Operating under the underworld nickname "El Remington," Álvarez del Castillo functioned as a prominent gun-for-hire at the direct service of regional government authorities and factions, executing targeted assassinations against political dissidents and rival local bosses.[3] Notably, he was also the historical brother-in-law of legendary actress María Félix.[3]
The film tracks "Don Rodolfo" (Antonio Medellín) as he navigates the violent, corrupt circles of the post-revolutionary political climate, establishing a ruthless reputation as an un-catchable marksman.[2][4] His continuous violent assignments escalate local tensions and create a vast network of enemies among regional gangs, merchants, and rival families.[4]
The narrative builds toward his historical assassination.[5] Around 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, December 10, 1936, while attending a crowded public festival in front of the Sanctuary of Guadalupe in Guadalajara, "El Remington" was ambushed and shot by several armed individuals at the northwest corner of Pedro Loza and Juan Álvarez streets.[5] Though he attempted to draw his revolver to defend himself, he was overwhelmed by gunfire.[6] The film depicts the chaotic public shootout as a mutual duel where both sides suffer fatal losses.[2] Álvarez del Castillo succumbed to his severe bullet wounds a few days later, with his official family obituary published on December 18, 1936.[7]
