History
Asato Station opened on August 10, 2003, coinciding with the inauguration of the Okinawa Urban Monorail line, which initially ran from Naha Airport to Shuri.[1]
Historically, the area was previously served by a station of the same name on the Okinawa Prefectural Railways (known locally as the "Keibin"), which operated from 1914 until it was destroyed during World War II in 1945.[2]
Surrounding area
The station is situated along Route 330. The immediate vicinity is known for the Sakaemachi Market (Sakaemachi Ichiba (栄町市場)), a retro marketplace established in 1955 during the post-war reconstruction. While it functions as a traditional market during the day, the area has gained popularity in recent years as a nightlife district known for its "senbero" (low-cost drinking) establishments and small eateries.[3]
