Asteroids is a 1998 video game developed by Syrox Developments and published by Activision. It is a remake of the original Asteroids.[4]
The player pilots a small ship in a two‑dimensional space field where movement wraps from one edge of the screen to the opposite side. The ship rotates left or right, thrusts forward, fires its primary weapon, activates shields, performs a 180‑degree flip, and can jump via hyperspace. Large asteroids drift across the screen and break into smaller fragments when hit, and the player must continually clear these while avoiding collisions. Enemy ships appear periodically, and additional hazards include regenerating crystal asteroids, indestructible asteroids, mild black holes that pull the ship inward, and stars that occasionally emit bursts of hazardous gas. Numerous power‑ups can be collected, such as ramming shields, homing missiles, smart bombs, and an orbiting turret called the GunSat that fires automatically and blocks incoming objects. The action consists of repeatedly navigating these threats, destroying debris and enemies, and surviving long enough to achieve higher scores.[5]
