Contrary to all other sports at this Universiade, athletes from Russia were not allowed to compete, due to the doping ban of the Russian Athletics Federation, which began in 2015. A start as Authorised Neutral Athletes was prevented by a lack of agreement between the IAAF and the FISU.[2]
