Alkalihalobacillus pseudofirmus

Alkalihalophilus pseudofirmus is a species of Gram-positive, aerobic, rod-shaped, endospore-forming alkaliphilic bacterium. It was originally described as Bacillus pseudofirmus in 1995.[1] The specific epithet pseudofirmus means "false firmus", referring to its physiological similarity to Bacillus firmus. The type strain is PN-3T (= DSM 8715T = ATCC 700159T = LMG 17944T).

The species was transferred to Alkalihalobacillus in 2020 and subsequently to the newly established genus Alkalihalophilus, of which it is the type species.[2]
A 2019 study isolated an alkaliphilic bacterium from a hyperalkaline spring in Zambales, Philippines, that was phylogenetically affiliated with A. pseudofirmus. In combination with an isolate affiliated with Salipaludibacillus agaradhaerens, the bacterial consortium was reported to degrade low-density polyethylene in vitro, with degradation enhanced by iron oxide nanoparticles.[3]
