Development
Backyard Sports: The Animated Special, a television special based on the Backyard Sports franchise, particularly the Backyard Baseball series, began development in April 2024,[2] a month after Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett gained the franchise's rights from film producers Stuart Avi Savitski and Ari Pinchot, who co-maintain film and television rights after the transfer. Irish animation studio Lighthouse Studios animated the special and co-produced it alongside Playground Productions. Production on the special completed in October 2025, and was released to YouTube in January 2026, thus providing the first major original production in the franchise since two mobile games released in 2015 and Playground Productions' reboot commenced in 2024. In November 2025, Barnett and Playground's chief product officer Chris Waters stated hopes that a scripted series would be made if the special is successful.[3] The Animated Special would be followed by the release of a new Backyard Baseball game developed by Mega Cat Studios and published by Playground Productions on July 9, 2026; Lighthouse Studios animated the game's intro.
At San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, 2026, Playground Productions announced that the special would be followed up by a series titled Backyard Sports: The Animated Series.[1][4][5] Lighthouse Studios will again provide animation, while several cast members from the special reprise their voice roles.[1][4][5] Twenty episodes running for 11 minutes each will be produced.[1][4][5] The announcement was accompanied by a sizzle reel teaser trailer featuring new footage and footage from The Animated Special, along with new images from the series.[1][4][5] Waters will serve as the series' showrunner, as well as an executive producer alongside Barnett, Pinchot, and Savitsky.[1][4][5] Juston Gordon-Montgomery will serve as the series' supervising director, while Adam Aseraf and Sarah Nevada Smith will be the head writers and also serve as co-executive producers.[1][4][5] Ashleigh Crystal Hairston, the voice of Sunny Day in the special and the series, posted on Instagram that she would also be writing for the series.[6] According to Bleeding Cool, the series is targeting a January 2027 release.[7]
