Many variations exist, which may incorporate primary ingredients such as cabbage,[4][5] beans,[6] potato,[7] lentils, spinach, peas, cauliflower, broccoli, leeks, pumpkin[8] and rice.[9]

Bacon is a common addition to many soups including creamy soups, especially those with a mild flavor that will not overpower the bacon.[10]
