History
…Even after independence, we ourselves have seen people from different places of Ratnagarbha Bangalpara collecting shells and selling them in front of the old sub-registrar office of Austagram. If pearl stalls could be set up just 30–40 years ago, if pearls could be so abundant, then who can say that the Nawab’s pearl necklace was not made of pearls from my Bangalpara!
Because the pearls from Bangalpara’s shells were famous throughout India. There is evidence that these pearls were also valued in England. Basically, settlement in this region began after the arrival of Ananta Dutta. In undivided India, Bangalpara was included within Assam. There were extensive battles here between Isa Khan and the Koch and Hajong kings, and again in 1638 a fierce war took place between the Mughals and the Ahom rulers. In that battle, the Ahom king was defeated and retreated to Assam. There is ample evidence of the settlement of Assamese-speaking people in this region. Due to the numerical dominance of Bengali-speaking people, the area came to be known as ‘Bangalpara’.
