Barnes is a town in Bayfield County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 823 at the 2020 census, up from 769 at the 2010 census.[4] The town was named for an early settler named George Sardis Barnes who opened the first hotel, saloon, and store north of the Eau Claire lakes in the late 1880s.[5]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 124.2 square miles (321.8 km2), of which 117.8 square miles (305.0 km2) is land and 6.5 square miles (16.9 km2), or 5.24%, is water.[4] Barnes is along Wisconsin Highway 27 and Bayfield County Highway N.
Barnes occupies the southwestern corner of Bayfield County, with Douglas County to the west and Sawyer County to the south.
