History
It was first mentioned in 1466 as "an dat Barenvledder", and means "moorland which can be used as a fuel".[3] The postal authorities have placed Barnflair under Ter Apel,[4] and it is considered part of the build up area of Ter Apel, however it is still slightly outside of the village, and could be considered a hamlet.[5] Barnflair consists of about 100 houses.[5]
