Bektaş (Arabic: بكدشيّة;[2] Kurdish: Bektaşî;[3] Syriac: ܒܓܕܐܫܝܗ, romanized: Bagdashiyya)[2][a] is a neighbourhood in the municipality and district of Kızıltepe, Mardin Province in Turkey.[5] The village is populated by Kurds of the Xalecan tribe and had a population of 409 in 2021.[1][3]
The Syriac Orthodox Monastery of Mor Barṣawmo, located between Bagdashiyya (today called Bektaş) and Ḥashray, is attested in the 12th–13th centuries and was rebuilt by Yuhanna, metropolitan of Mardin (r. 1125–1165), who also built a church at Bagdashiyya.[6] According to Michel Le Quien, there was a bishop of Bagdashiyya named John in 1210 (AG 1521).[7] The priest Abraham of Bagdashiyya (fl. 1314) was a notable calligrapher.[8]
