Bombay Theatre

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bombay Theatre or the Bombay Playhouse was an early theatre situated in Bombay in India. It was situated within the English fort of Bombay, north of the Bombay Green (later rebuilt as Horniman Circle).[1] It was proposed in 1770, and a public subscription was raised for it by 1775, supported by a land grant from the government. It was among the earliest theatres in British India, preceded only by the older Calcutta Playhouse.[2] The theatre eventually fell out of popular favour, and was closed by the 1840s.[3]
