Omar Bongo

The Bongo family is a Gabonese and Congolese political family of Teke ethnicity, some members are of Fang ethnicity, while some people related to the family are of Baskata people.[1] Three members of the Bongo extended family (Omar Bongo, Ali Bongo, and Brice Oligui Nguema) have ruled Gabon from 1967 until 2009 and again since 2009.[2][3] Omar served as president from 1967 until his death in 2009, and was succeeded in the presidency by his son Ali Bongo, who served until 2023 when he was overthrown by his cousin Brice Oligui Nguema in a coup.

Denis Sassou Nguesso, the current President of the Republic of the Congo, is related to the Bongo family through the marriage of his late daughter Edith Lucie to Omar Bongo.
