The name "Carabao Dang" comes from the Carabao Group's association with the band Carabao, combined with the German Tawandang Brewery Restaurant.[3] It is marketed with the slogan "Carabao Dang: The Fighting Spirit".[4]
Carabao Tawandang Co., Ltd. was established and incorporated on 22 August 2001, with an initial registered capital of one million Baht.[5][6] The company is a joint venture between Mr. Yuenyong Opakul (also known as "Add Carabao"), the founder and lead singer of Thailand's most successful song-for-life band Carabao, and German Tawandang Brewery—a restaurant owned by Mr. Sathien Sathientham and Ms. Nutchamai Thanombooncharoen.[7][8]
As the company grew, the shareholders shifted their strategy toward a vertically integrated business model, expanding operations to include sourcing, production, marketing, and distribution.[9] This led to the establishment of Carabao Group Public Co., Ltd., which registered its conversion to a public limited company on 8 July 2014 and was listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) on 21 November 2014.[10][11]
Product Development and Market Expansion
In 2004, the company began expanding into international markets by establishing an export sales team responsible for the marketing and distribution of Carabao Dang energy drink. This marked the beginning of its overseas business expansion, initially focusing on Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, and other Southeast Asian markets.[12][13]
In 2014, the company entered the sports drink market with the launch of an electrolyte beverage under the name Start Plus. The product was rebranded as Carabao Sport in 2018 to align with the company's core brand identity.[14][15]
In 2016, the company diversified its product portfolio by launching Carabao Bottled Water in February and Carabao Coffee in July, available in both ready-to-drink (RTD) and 3-in-1 formats. In the same year, it established joint-venture subsidiaries, including Carabao Holdings (Hong Kong) Limited (CHHK), Carabao Ventures Luxembourg S.à r.l. (CVHLUX), and Intercarabao UK Limited (ICUK), to oversee the marketing and distribution of Carabao-branded products in the United Kingdom and other non-Asian markets.[16][17]
In 2018, the company expanded its energy drink portfolio with the launch of Carabao Green Apple in cans for the Thai market.[18][19]
In 2020, the company entered the functional beverage market through a partnership with Vuthithorn "Woody" Milintachinda to launch Woody C+ Lock, a vitamin C beverage using the company's "C+ Lock" packaging technology.[20][21]
In 2022, the company introduced Kanzou X2, an energy drink formulated with turmeric and liver extracts. During the same year, the flagship Carabao Dang formula was reformulated to contain four times more vitamin B12 than the previous formulation.[22][23][24]
In 2023, the company expanded its sports drink portfolio internationally with the introduction of an isotonic variant of Carabao Sport. The product was distributed by its subsidiary, Intercarabao UK Limited (ICUK), in the United Kingdom and Europe.[25][26]
Production
Carabao Energy Drink is manufactured by Carabao Tawandang Co., Ltd. at the company's integrated production complex in Bang Pakong District, Chachoengsao Province, Thailand. The facility comprises beverage bottling and canning plants, as well as glass bottle and aluminium can manufacturing facilities. According to Krones, the Bang Pakong complex operates eight Krones production lines, including a canning line installed in 2021 with a capacity of up to 74,000 cans per hour. The facility produces approximately two billion beverage containers annually for distribution in Thailand and export to more than 40 countries.[27]
Sponsorship
In 2015, Carabao began expanding its brand presence in the United Kingdom by becoming the front-of-shirt sponsor of Reading F.C. for the 2015–16 EFL Championship season, supporting the brand's entry into the European market.[28]
Later that year, Carabao signed a three-year agreement to become the Principal Partner of Chelsea F.C., beginning with the 2016–17 season. The partnership included the club's training kit sponsorship and a range of commercial and marketing activities aimed at strengthening Carabao's international brand presence.[29]
In 2017, Carabao became the title sponsor of the English Football League Cup, which was subsequently renamed the Carabao Cup. The initial sponsorship agreement covered three seasons.[30]
In 2020, Carabao expanded its football sponsorship activities in Scotland by becoming the Official Energy Drink Partner of Heart of Midlothian F.C. and Hibernian F.C. for the 2020–21 season.[31]
In 2023, Carabao became the principal sponsor of Hoàng Anh Gia Lai F.C. in V.League 1 and returned as the Official Sports Drink Partner of Reading F.C.[32]
In 2026, the sponsorship agreement for the Carabao Cup was extended until the end of the 2028–29 season, making Carabao the longest-serving title sponsor in the competition's history.[33]
In addition to club and competition sponsorships, Carabao has supported grassroots football development in Thailand through initiatives such as Carabao Coach the Coaches, delivered in partnership with the English Football League (EFL), as well as the Carabao 7-a-Side Cup and Carabao Grassroots Football programmes, which promote youth coaching and community football participation.[34][35]
