Carlos Soto Rengifo

Carlos Enrique Soto Rengifo[1] (8 April 1891 – 27 November 1981) was a Chilean physician, surgeon and politician who was a member of the Socialist Party of Chile (PS).[2]

He served as Minister of Public Education during the so-called Socialist Republic of Chile, under the administration of Carlos Dávila between June and August 1932.[2]

Biography

Soto was born in Santiago, Chile, on 8 April 1891, the son of Casiano Soto and Rosa Rengifo. He studied at the School of Medicine of the University of Chile, graduating as a physician and surgeon in 1926.[1]

He married Lila Rosa González Utreras in Santiago on 26 October 1981. She was the daughter of Carlos Luis González and Lucinda Rosa Utreras.[1]

Political career

Soto completed his medical internship at the San Francisco de Borja Hospital, where he subsequently practised medicine for several years.[1]

A member of the Socialist Party of Chile (PS), Soto was appointed Minister of Public Education on 16 June 1932 by Carlos Dávila, president of the Government Junta of the Socialist Republic of Chile, which had been established following a coup d'état on 4 June. He remained in office until 1 August 1932.[1]

Soto died in Santiago on 27 November 1981, at the age of 90.[1]
