2020 census

As of the 2020 census, there were 6,564 people and 3,090 households in the town, including 1,764 family households.^[6][7]

The median age was 50.8 years. 15.7% of residents were under the age of 18 and 22.6% were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females, there were 93.7 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 90.9 males age 18 and over.^[7]

100.0% of residents lived in urban areas, while 0.0% lived in rural areas.^[8]

Of the town's 3,090 households, 21.6% had children under the age of 18 living in them. 48.2% were married-couple households, 17.9% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 26.3% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. 31.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.^[7]

There were 5,618 housing units, of which 45.0% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 2.5% and the rental vacancy rate was 43.4%.^[7]

2013 census estimate

At the 2013 census estimate,^[4] the population density was 2,086.4 people per square mile (805.6 people/km²).

The median income for a household in the town was $37,662, and the median income for a family was $44,882. Males had a median income of $31,013 versus $21,241 for females. The per capita income for the town was $24,128. About 8.4% of families and 14.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.9% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
