Australian rules football is different to European football (soccer) in many ways, but in terms of teams, there is no "football pyramid" with potential elevation/relegation every season. We now have 1 top level national league, plus a state level league in 3 states, and then a lot of local metropolitan and country/rural leagues. Teams (and players) may move leagues, but not up or down annually as per how most European leagues work. In this case, the team did move in 1997 from the state (SANFL) to the national (AFL). In most records, the games played for the AFL team are not added to the games played in lower leagues. To complicate matters more, there still is a team in the SANFL called Port Adelaide, that was for a short time technically a separate club (Magpies), but now is the reserves team for the AFL team. So it is a complicated mix of teams that we had correct before. Please don't change/merge anything unless you know who the Cahills, Eberts, Phillips and Williams are.
TL/DR: The club recognises the SANFL and AFL players as their players, hence this (all competitions) cat. We could delete this (all competitions) cat from all articles as a duplicate, and leave it as a parent cat to just contain the 4 possible child cats:
- Category:Port Adelaide Football Club players for players who played for Port Adelaide in the AFL
- Category:Port Adelaide Magpies players for players who played for Port Adelaide in the SANFL between 1997 and 2010
- Category:Port Adelaide Football Club (SANFL) players for players who played for Port Adelaide in the SANFL before 1997 or after 2010
- Category:Port Adelaide Football Club (AFLW) players for players who played for Port Adelaide in the AFL Women's league
