The act paralled the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 (23 & 24 Geo. 5. c. 12), which applied to England and Wales.[2]

The Children (Scotland) Act 1995 amended language in section 12 regarding parental responsibilities, with effect from 1 November 1996.[8]
