A flame shoots out of the right-hand chimney flue in the clearest indication of an ongoing chimney fire at a residence in Marlboro, VT. Note that the cowl has partly melted from the intense heat of the flame.

A chimney fire is the combustion (burning) of residue deposits referred to as soot or creosote, on the inner surfaces of chimney tiles, flue liners, stove pipes, etc.
