The Chinese Taipei Basketball Association (CTBA) was established as the Republic of China Basketball Committee (Chinese: 中華民國籃球委員會) in 1954. The organization changed its name to the Republic of China Basketball Association in 1973.[2]
In 1975, the People's Republic of China was admitted to FIBA and the Taiwanese association was suspended.[3]
It began organizing the international invitational tournament William Jones Cup in 1977 amidst its FIBA suspension.[4]
The Taiwanese association was re-admitted to FIBA agreeing to change its name to the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association and its national teams to play under the designation "Chinese Taipei".[5]
National teams
The CTBA fields both men's and women's national teams and competes in international tournaments as "Chinese Taipei" since 1986. At the 1959 FIBA World Championship, the men's team competed as "Formosa". From 1960 to 1974, the national teams competed under the name "Taiwan".[6]
