Claire Brosseau

Canadian actress and comedian (born 1977) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Claire Brosseau (born February 24, 1977) is Canadian actress, writer and stand-up comedian.[1] In 2025, she became the centre of an ongoing national debate in Canada regarding assisted dying for applicants suffering from mental illness.

Request and advocacy for assisted dying

According to Brosseau, she has been suffering from various mental illnesses since infancy. She claims to have tried different types of treatments over the years to no avail and to have repeatedly tried to end her life. As her condition deteriorated, she gradually became withdrawn from the world, ultimately never leaving her apartment while only seeing her parents and her sister occasionally. During this time, Brosseau had made her desire known to receive a procedure of assisted dying.

While Brosseau sees her condition as incurable, it is a requirement for assisted dying in Canada that the condition causing the patient's suffering is medically proven to be incurable. Brosseau's request has sparked a national debate regarding the definition of irremediability of mental Illness and the rights of people suffering from mental Illness to use assisted dying.

In 2021, Brosseau applied for Canada's medical aid in dying (MAID) program, but was subsequently rejected on the grounds that she was physically healthy.[2]

As of 2024, Dying With Dignity Canada, an advocacy organization, is arguing on her behalf in courts that the exclusion of people with mental illness from access to assisted death is discriminatory.[3]
