It is one of the churches for the Rjukan parish which is part of the Øvre Telemark prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1775 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. It was rebuilt in 1844 to give it a rectangular design using plans by Hans Linstow.
