Dhimar

The Dhimar is a Hindu caste in India, sometimes referred to as a sub-caste of boatmen.[1] The term "Dhimar" originates from the Sanskrit word "Dhivara," which means a fisherman. Dhimars are also known as Kahar, Bhoi, Palewar, Baraua, and Machhandar.[2]
Dhimars primarily reside in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Gujarat and Delhi. They also worked historically as fishermen, workmen in cultivation along the river banks, water carriers, rope weavers, grindstone sharpeners, and sellers of sweet potatoes, dry grains, rice and boiled plums.
Communities that are related to the Dhimar include Jhinwar, Jhir, Kanshilya, Koshyal, Dhinwar, Dhewar, Jhimar, Kashyap, Kahar.Kashyap Rajput Mehra. Living primarily in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.[3]
