Draft:2025 Karting European Championship

56th edition of the CIK-FIA European Championship From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2025 Mondokart.com FIA Karting European Championship was the 56th edition of the CIK-FIA European Championship, a kart racing competition organised and sanctioned by the Commission Internationale de Karting (CIK-FIA). The European Championship was held in five classes: OK, OK-J, KZ, KZ2, and KZ2-M.

OK and OK-J were held across four rounds between 3 April and 3 August at Campillos, Spain; Portimão, Portugal; Viterbo, Italy; and Rødby, Denmark. KZ and KZ2 were held across three rounds between 15 May and 20 July at Valencia, Spain; Sarno, Italy; and Mülsen, Germany. KZ2-M was held as a single-round final at the Sarno event.

In his final season of karting, Christian Costoya affirmed his dominance of the OK season with perfect weekends in Portimão and Viterbo, ending 57 points clear of James Anagnostiadis. In OK-J, Dean Hoogendoorn withstood a challenge from Noah Baglin, before Baglin's disqualification from the Viterbo round saw William Calleja pass him for second. The professional KZ class was tightly contested by Mattéo Spirgel and Pedro Hiltbrand, with Spirgel dominating the Mülsen round and clinching his second European Championship. Maksim Orlov dominated in KZ2—winning all three finals—and Antonio Piccioni emerged victorious in a contentious KZ2-M final.

Background

The Commission Internationale de Karting (CIK-FIA) was founded in 1962 and held the first CIK-FIA European Nations' Cup that year, which was won by Great Britain.[1] The individual CIK-FIA European Championship was inaugurated eight years later and became the secondary international title to the CIK-FIA World Championship.[2] It began utilising a multi-round format since 1991.[3] As of the beginning of 2025, five previous European Champions had progressed to win the Formula One World Drivers' Championship,[note 1] while Marco Ardigò won a record five titles between 2005 and 2016.[5] The reigning European Champions were Joe Turney (OK), Dries Van Langendonck (OK-J), Lorenzo Travisanutto (KZ), Mattéo Spirgel (KZ2), and Riccardo Nalon (KZ2-M).[6]

Classes

There were five classes—two direct-drive classes and three gearbox classes—contested across the 2025 season:[7]

  • Original Kart (OK), the senior direct-drive class since 2016 for drivers aged 14 and over, often regarded as the feeder class to Formula 4.
  • OK-Junior (OK-J), the junior direct-drive class since 2016 for drivers aged 12 to 14.
  • KZ, the primary gearbox class since 2007 for drivers aged 15 and over, often regarded as the professional class.
  • KZ2, the secondary gearbox class since 2007 for drivers aged 15 and over.
  • KZ2-Masters (KZ2-M), the senior gearbox class since 2024 for drivers aged 35 and over.

Format

The five-stage format used since 2022 remained in effect for the 2025 season, with each round held over a three-day weekend composed of free practice (FP), qualifying practice (QP), qualifying heats (QH), super heats (SH), and a final:[8]

  • Friday: FP (morning), QP + QH (afternoon);
  • Saturday: warm-up + QH;
  • Sunday: warm-up + SH (morning), final (afternoon).

In rounds with less than 37 entrants, there were three QHs as opposed to the usual six, as well as a single SH on the Saturday afternoon rather than two on Sunday morning.[8]

Calendar

The 2025 calendar featured four events in OK and OK-J, three events in KZ and KZ2, and a single event in KZ2-M:

Calendar changes

The 2025 edition retained the four-round OK and OK-J format, as well as an expanded three-round KZ and KZ2 season. KZ2-M was reduced to a single-round final after its introduction in 2024. Each event was preceded by a Champions of the Future (COTF) round the week before; the Valencia prelude in KZ saw 21 drivers, including six World Champions, boycott the final in a dispute with the CIK-FIA over its mandating Dunlop tyres.[10][11][12] The CIK-FIA subsequently dropped Dunlop as a tyre supplier for the final round of the European Championship.[13]

Mülsen made its European Championship debut in the KZ and KZ2 classes—becoming the second international circuit in Germany after Wackersdorf—as did Viterbo in OK and OK-J. The Mülsen round was preceded by a stand-alone international event, the Road to Mülsen, which displaced the usual COTF round and was won by Émilien Denner (KZ) and Maksim Orlov (KZ2). Rødby returned following its introduction in 2023, as well as Valencia in its third consecutive appearance. The calendar also saw the return of three former World Championship venues: Campillos, Portimão, and Sarno.
