Regarding their music, they draw inspiration not only from modern metal but also from post-punk, emo-rap, and Slavic folk music, witch-house. 20Tokens creates music characterized by emotional depth and energetic intensity.[1]
History
The band was originally a one-piece band consisted by the current frontman, Valerii Chubenko in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine. While most of the lyrics are written by him, he reveals that the songs talk about real-life events and people and is always about something personal. He has described music as a form of therapy and a means to connect with others who share similar feelings, aiming to reassure listeners that they are not alone in their struggles.[2][1]
As Chubenko's interest in emo-rap waned, he began collaborating with drummer Davidas to explore rock music, transforming the solo project into a full band.[1] They first gained attention through TikTok, especially through the covers of famous songs that were posted,[3] the first being Valeriya's "Chasiki".[4]
In 2021, they appeared for the first time at Fox Rock fest in Russia.[5]
The themes of the songs are various while combining emotional lyrics, extreme vocals and heavy live instruments. 20Tokens would describe their music as energetic, powerful, and intense – with moments that can be as brutal as they are heartbreaking. They hope to bring forth a new wave of alternative metal.[3][1]
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the band relocated to Berlin, where they reformed and shifted to performing in English.[1] In Germany, 20Tokens found a welcoming audience, with their music resonating deeply with local fans.[1] The band has expressed profound gratitude for the support they received and has developed a strong attachment to their new home.[1]
Inspirations
The band draws inspiration from different kinds of music genres, including but not limited to modern metal, post-punk, emo rap, witch house and Slavic folk music.[1] When writing music bands such as Slipknot, My Chemical Romance, HIM, Bring Me the Horizon, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Woods of desolation,[2]Three Days Grace, Killswitch Engage, Sleep Token. Bullet for My Valentine, Deftones and Rob Zombie[6] are listed as inspirations. They are also inspired by modern artists Travis Scott, Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Peep and Chase Atlantic.[2]
