ADiT-Lab (Applied Digital Transformation Laboratory) is a research and development (R&D) unit of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (IPVC), Portugal, focused on digital transformation and the development of applied technological solutions in organizational and societal contexts.[1]

The unit is part of the Portuguese scientific and technological system and has been recognized as a research unit by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) within the national R&D evaluation process for the period 2025–2029.[2]
It is also registered in national science management platforms such as PTCRIS, which aggregate information on research units and scientific projects in Portugal.[3]
History
ADiT-Lab was established in 2021 as part of the strategy to strengthen applied research at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo.
Since its creation, the unit has developed research activities focused on the practical application of digital technologies, particularly in the digital transformation of public and private organizations.[1]
In 2024, it was recognized as a research unit by FCT, receiving a rating of Good and funding for the period 2025–2029.[2]
Mission
ADiT-Lab aims to promote applied research in digital technologies and to contribute to organizational modernization through innovation.
Its activities emphasize knowledge transfer and collaboration between academia, industry and public institutions.
Research areas
ADiT-Lab organizes its scientific activity into several thematic areas related to digital transformation:
Intelligent environments
Intelligent environments result from the integration of information and communication technologies with the physical world, enabling adaptive and context-aware systems.
Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity focuses on protecting systems, networks and data, including vulnerability analysis, attack detection and mitigation strategies.
Organizational processes
This area addresses the analysis and optimization of value-adding activities within organizations, including information and resource management.
Interactive media
Interactive media focuses on the development of digital systems and content tailored to users’ needs, including interfaces and immersive experiences.
Scientific activity
ADiT-Lab promotes scientific initiatives, events and knowledge dissemination activities.
In 2026, it organized the event Digital Transformation: Building AI-Driven Organizations, bringing together national and international experts to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence on organizations.[4][5]
Academic initiatives
ADiT-Lab collaborates with other higher education institutions in organizing scientific initiatives for young researchers.
One example is SASYR (Symposium of Applied Science for Young Researchers), which brings together master’s students and early-stage researchers from ADiT-Lab (IPVC), 2Ai (IPCA) and CeDRI (IPB).[6]
